Description:

In August 2011, The City of Calgary launched the new Calgary.ca, the first public-facing integration of SharePoint and the Google Search Appliance. When creating the new Calgary.ca, we realized that the navigation-based paradigm of Government web sites was fundamentally broken. Citizens are task focused and want to be able to search for information. They don't want to have to guess where to find things, or learn complex Government organization charts to get to where they want to go.  The City of Calgary's solution was to present information so it was citizen centric. The site had to be simple, intuitive, and usable. There needed to be an easy way to access accurate information. So we looked at how people are accessing information irrespective of industry or site; we looked at search. The new Calgary.ca allows citizens to:

  • Be better informed - the information is accurate and available in near real-time.
  • Find information when they want it - with the Google Search Appliance on the home page they don't have to understand the corporate structure to navigate and they can search using the words that citizens actually use, not bureaucratic language.
  • Have information easily in the palms of their hands – the new site detects when it is being accessed from a mobile device
